Wembley - inspiring memories

The FA Cup Final 11th May 2013

It's once again FA Cup Final time, and once again we present the match in gigapixel panoramic format, this time capturing the Manchester City and Wigan Athletic crowds on their big day at Wembley.

This year, the 360Cities team led by photographer Jeffrey Martin came back to shoot the latest Wembley monster panorama. Time and technology march on, and since last year, the hardware and software used in creating the Wembley 360s allow for an even smoother and quicker turnaround.

The Wembley 360 is shot from opposite the players' tunnel at pitchside. It is a gigapixel panorama, which means that the final image is a picture with more than a BILLION pixels. Your standard digital camera has a few MILLION pixels (megapixels) only. We use a special camera (Canon EOS-1D X) that allows rapid firing of hundreds of images, and we use a very long telephoto lens (Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM to be precise).

But then these hundreds of pictures have to be joined together as seamlessly - and as quickly - as possible. The team uses special software and a powerful workstation to join the images together into a single image, and then deploy it to wembley360.wembleystadium.com all within a few hours. It means another long night at the keyboard for Jeff Martin, but the result is a memento of a momentous occasion that fans and visitors will be able to return to for years to come.
